“Parco dei Mostri”, DiverseWorks, Houston, TX, September 6 – October 25, 2014

DiverseWorks is proud to present Parco dei Mostri, a four-room installation of new work by Pepe Mar in collage, sculpture, photography and performance. The exhibition title alludes to the sixteenth-century "Park of Monsters" in Bomarzo, Italy, where Mannerist themes from history and mythology render bedrock sculptures of sublime size and disposition. The artist's quadrants remediate 1990s nostalgia to produce a convivial grotesque navigating memory, cultural narrative, experience and affect. In Mar's Parco dei Mostri, personal brand gives way to public expression of intensities; the beautiful and the terrible give to each another; threat and treat exist one letter apart.
