“Versus”, (The Andy Warhol Foundation/Cannonball Wavemaker Grant project), Miami, FL, September 2015
VERSUS is a temporary installation conceived by Pepe Mar which will last for two months and take the form of a gay bar; it includes a recent body of work of self-referential clothing by Mar- designer clothing which the artist wore during the halcyon club days of the 90’s and early 2000’s including Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Jean Paul Gaulthier, and others, framed in baroque style frames, referencing the baroque atmosphere of the former gay club scene that is now defunct in Miami. VERSUS shall host performances by queer artists such as Jacolby Satterwhite. The exhibition fills a huge void in Miami’s mainland which is totally without this kind of venue, as an alternative to the 2 venues on South Beach, vestiges of a gloried gay past, now virtually forgotten (Paragon, Warsaw, Salvation, 821, to name but a few legendary ones). The project operates as a real bar, inviting the community to engage with a queer aesthetic, in a welcoming, artistic, and safe space.
